Man… it’s just been one of those mornings.

You know, the kind when you’re walking under a building and every single drop of rain falling off the eaves hits you on the head. Like they’re just sitting up there waiting for you to walk under so they can kamikaze your noggin.

The kind where you’re already running a couple minutes behind, and your reach over some stacked up boxes to grab your trail mix, resulting in the trail mix falling behind said boxes.

I meant to write about this the other day, after the drive home. You know how when you’re driving on the highway, you’re infallible and everyone else on the road are all idiots, retards, and maniacs?
Well, have you ever had one of those idiots in front of you, driving too slow, or with one blinker on, or speeding up and slowing down, etc?

I noticed that whenever that happens to me, and I finally get the opening to pass them, I always try to discreetly take a look at who’s driving — as if seeing who they are will somehow justify their poor driving. “Ohhhhh! Bearded people with mirrored sunglasses and slightly balding heads can’t drive.”
Or license plates. Like it somehow validates poor driving when you can generalize an entire class of people by their state. I heard that a lot about Joisey drivers growing up. “New Joisey drivers can’t drive.” Same thing about NYC drivers as well. (The ultimate humor on that was that all the NYC and New Joisey drivers eventually moved to our town, so Pennsylvania drvers became just as bad.)

The fact is, we just look for any excuse we can for blaming other drivers on the road for being moronic. I think that’s how racism and stereotypes start. We see something we don’t like and try to systematically make sense of it by looking for some sort of pattern or theme. And we totally forego any evidence in contra to our findings. We may see 99 New Joisey drivers that are totally reasonable (but probably speedy…) drivers, but that ONE driver that we see, the one driving in reverse at 75 mph, sours the whole lot for us.

And for those of you who are just now glancing at my “what you’re listening to” line [This was formerly on MySpace. -- Ed. ] – Yes, I am listening to the new Madonna CD. I bought it for my sister. (Actually, I’m listening to the mp3s of it on my iPod, but I did legitimately buy a copy, so put your gavels and RIAA handbooks down, Lars). It’s really not that bad if you like gay disco house. :) [I occasionally do]
