PA Trek, Part 2

Good god….. I’m sooooooo full right now. I swear the moment I walked in the door, my mom was pushing candied goods and sweets at me. Moms can be like tobacco companies — they get you hooked on their stuff when you’re young, and you just can’t resist it when you’re older!

Today was a good day. RevJon and I did our on-site Perkins breakfast (Pancakes, bizzles!), and I drove the last 2 hrs out to PA — it went by pretty quickly. I have this tradition for my trips from Indiana to PA — I’ve done it every year except last year; I always have to play the Tenacious D album — at least half of it — on the trip to PA. I don’t know what it is… the trip just doesn’t feel right without it.

PA Trek, Part 1

Well, it’s nearly 2 am. RevJon and I are currently in…. ok I don’t know the town, but it’s in central PA. We’re around exit 160 or so. We’re watching “Homewrecker” on MTV right now, and it’s proving to be very distracting.

The trip to PA has been pretty uneventful so far, as expected. What else can you expect from driving through a state that’s 310 miles wide with only 53 exits.

When we got to the hotel, RevJon was checking in and there were some people standing behind us — 20-somethings — who were commenting on the Dayton snowfall from last year (which sucked some SERIOUS tucus… RevJon and I drove through it last year for this very same annual voyage). Anyhow, we got to talking and it turns out that they were on their way TO Dayton (where they’re from originally) from Boston, MA. RevJon is from Massacheusetts himself. So we all had a little chat about that for a little while. Read the rest of this entry »

In a lot of these posts I have mentioned such prestigious names as “RevJon” “The Gill” and others. I’ve been meaning to write a blog explaining the origin of those names, as well as others. Some of the etymology behind these words/phrases is kind of interesting. I may periodically update this if I think of more.

[ top ]The Gill - This is Rob. His last name is Gill, and “The Gill” is leftover from a short period a couple years ago when my friends and I were all referring to each other as objects. (I still get occasionally called “The Aaron”). I somewhat think that whole phenomena might have BEGAN with The Gill, since I used to refer to him as “The Book of Gill”, due to his nearly-photographic memory when it comes to recalling data and tables. Particularly with gaming.

Wine Weirdness

Jon, The Gill, and Myself went out to Kroger’s to go shopping for the TG goodies. Jon already had a turkey (an 18 pounder!), so we were just going for the extra stuff…and as Emeril has been saying lately…*ahem*…the “yumyums” *shudder*

Anyways… fast forward past us searching for McIntosh apples, candied Ginger, and mini-marshmallows (I swear these are ingredients…Jon’s a big Alton Brown buff…), all the way up to the most important part of any establishment: the wine and spirits section. After ogling the Tanqueray 10 bottle for a few moments, that pretty, pretty, green glass Tanqueray 10 bottle….*drool* umm…. ???

Ok!

So we’re in the wine section picking out some wines for Thanksgiving. We picked out three bottles: Rosemount Estate Cabernet-Shiraz, Oliver Vineyard Soft White (for The Gill, who likes sweeter wines), and some….zinfandel….I think Beringer, I don’t remember.

Personally I prefer Kool-Aid brand kool-aid, but to each their own.

Anyways, on our way towards the checkout we passed a sign that said “10% off six bottles of wine.” It seemed like a good idea at the time. We selected three more bottles. Woodbridge (Robert Mondavi Collection) Cabernet Sauvignon, Oliver Vineyard Mead, and (this is hilarious) a bottle of “Four Emus Cabernet-Sauvignon-Shiraz-Merlot”. [In retrospect, any self-respecting wine-drinker would probably not be shopping for wine at a grocery store, unless it was in France. And any self-respecting wine vendor should never have to use discount promotions unless the wine is only a small step above anti-freeze.]
